Facts

The appellant, a national of Bangladesh, appealed to the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) against the Secretary of State's decision of 22 January 2025 refusing his protection and human rights claims. He married his first wife in 2007 and they divorced in 2011, after which the couple engaged in long-running court proceedings in Bangladesh about maintenance payments for his ex-wife and their son. He claimed to fear his ex-wife's family, saying they were connected both to the Awami League and to the BNP, that gangsters brought into his shop by her older brother in January 2013 had threatened to ruin his life, that he was arrested in March 2021 because of the family court case, and that in July 2022 four men surrounded and assaulted him as he returned from the mosque, the police declining to take his report. He left Bangladesh on his own passport, entered the United Kingdom in January 2023 and claimed asylum in May 2023. The respondent refused the claim, finding his evidence inconsistent, that there was sufficient protection and that he could relocate to Dhaka or Chittagong. The appeal was heard at Taylor House by video; the appellant neither attended nor was represented.
