Monuara Begum v The Secretary of State for the Home Department

The appellant, Mrs Monuara Begum, is a Bangladeshi national born on 1 January 1969. She entered the United Kingdom on 23 December 2023 on a six-month visit visa which expired on 13 June 2024, and on 7 June 2024, before that expiry, applied for leave to remain on the basis of family life. The Secretary of State for the Home Department refused the application on 6 January 2025, and she appealed to the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber). Her case was that she would face very significant obstacles to integration on return to Bangladesh: she described herself as an elderly widow with no viable support network, suffering from severe osteoarthritis, impaired mobility, chronic pain, cognitive decline, depression and anxiety, and dependent on her daughter, Mrs Shaida Islam Mou, and son-in-law, Mr Golam Rabbani, for cooking, medication, medical appointments, walking and emotional support. She relied on a medical report of Dr Ruhin Karim dated 10 July 2024, GP material and country policy and information notes on Bangladesh. She also said her husband had been murdered in Bangladesh in 2010 and that those responsible had created problems for her. The appeal was heard at Taylor House on 14 September 2026, the appellant, her daughter and son-in-law all giving evidence. Reliance on article 3 ECHR was expressly disclaimed at the outset.
