R v Ryan Cashin & Ors (Appeals against Sentence)

Facts

Rhamero West, aged 16, was murdered on 9 September 2021 in Manchester. On 8 April 2022, in the Crown Court at Manchester, Ryan Cashin was convicted of his murder; on 11 April 2022 Marquis Richards was convicted of the same murder by a majority of 10 to 2. Giovanni Lawrence was also convicted. On the trial judge's findings, Richards had travelled in a stolen BMW in convoy, signalled to other occupants the presence of the deceased and his friends, brandished a long-bladed knife at the blue BMW in which the deceased was sitting, taken part in a short and dangerous car chase, then led the pursuit on foot carrying the knife before handing it to Cashin, who chased the deceased down and stabbed him several times in broad daylight on a residential street. On 27 May 2022 Kerr J, who had presided over the trial, sentenced Cashin, then 19, to custody for life with a minimum term of 23 years and 142 days (24 years less 223 days on remand), and Richards, then 17 and 16 at the date of the offence, to detention during Her Majesty's pleasure with a minimum term of 17 years and 113 days (18 years less 252 days). The Full Court granted Cashin and Lawrence leave to appeal against both conviction and sentence.
