Facts
The appellant, Satnam Singh, is an Indian national born on 14 February 1959. He applied for a family visit visa on 18 October 2004 and was granted leave to enter, without permission to work or recourse to public funds, valid until 18 April 2005. He entered the United Kingdom on 28 October 2004 and did not leave at the end of his permitted leave, remaining unlawfully thereafter for more than twenty years, living first in Walsall and later in Handsworth, Birmingham. On 25 April 2025 he made an application for family, human rights and discretionary leave. On 29 January 2026, at Birmingham Crown Court, he was convicted of remaining in the United Kingdom beyond the time limit and of possessing or controlling identity documents with intent, and was sentenced to one year and one month's imprisonment. Deportation papers were served on him on 18 February 2026 following the first stage of service on 13 February 2026. His custodial term began in January 2026 and he was released in June 2026 before its end. On 15 May 2026 the Secretary of State refused his application for leave to remain and his human rights claims in respect of the deportation order, and he appealed to the First-tier Tribunal.
