Mr Dieu Quang Tran and Mrs Phung De Tran are the joint owners of 167 Stanley Road, Cheadle, a substantial five bedroom detached house of around 325 sq m standing in a plot of about 0.42 acres. Stanley Road runs parallel to the A555, the gardens of the houses backing towards the highway across a strip of agricultural land, the far end of the claimants' garden lying 100m from the A555 and 80m from the eastbound on-slip road. Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council completed the A6 Manchester Airport Relief Road scheme in 2018, constructing some 14km of dual carriageway between the A6 at Hazel Grove and Manchester Airport, incorporating an existing section of the A555 and improving connecting roads. The claimants contended that use of the improved A555 had increased noise, particularly at the rear of the property and in the garden, and claimed £50,000 for depreciation in value under Part I of the Land Compensation Act 1973. The authority denied any increase in noise or any depreciation caused by the scheme. The agreed first claim day and valuation date was 15 October 2019. Following a case management hearing on 27 February 2026, the reference was determined by the Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber) on written representations.
